Essentially the living being is the divine spark of the Supreme Soul. He has no connection with matter. However due to the long standing contact with matter he has become disposed to sense enjoyment. A typical character develops in him. He thinks himself as the proprietor and the controller of everything he sees. Consequently he forgets Krishna and his own eternal constitutional position and perpetually wanders in the vicious cycle of birth and death. But the Supreme Lord never ignores him. He descends to the world to rescue him from the mire of ignorance and forgetfulness. In this age of hatred and hypocrisy (Kali Yuga) the most magnanimous Lord incarnated as Sriman Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Understanding the pitiful and deplorable condition of the kali-stricken soul he eased the process of devotional service. He preached nothing, but the chanting of the Holy Name.

It was Mahaprabhu’s explicit instruction to Sri Nityananda Prabhu and Srila Haridasa Thakura:

“Prabhura ajnay bhai magi ei bhiksa
bolo Krishna bhaja Krishna kara Krishna siksa.”

Sriman Mahaprabhu ordered “Go to every doorstep and approach everyone. Beg only one alms. Please chant the name of Krishna. Please accept Sri Krishna as your Lord, your husband, your father and mother, your friend, your guardian, and your only worshipable Lord.” We all have loving and permanent relationship with Him. Material relationship is temporary.

Our revered spiritual master, Srila Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja has given the same instructions to all of us. As a genuine devotee of Sriman Mahaprabhu, Gurudeva had the only mission and priority of spreading the Holy Name. In beginning days of ISKCON Krishna Balarama Temple everything was very simple and humble. Gurudeva would ask us go for Harinama on every Sunday as it was off day for grihastha devotees. On every Sunday we would organize street Sankirtana programme in different parts of the city. We would collect alms and donation for the temple. With the collected alms we would cook bhoga for Gour Nitai (because they were the deities then). Srila Gurudeva would give Hari Katha and at the end devotees would take prasada.

Now we have renewed enthusiasm and concerted effort of the congregational devotees of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Matajis showed active participation in the programme. They volunteered in many ways such as collecting the funds, distributing the magazines and cooking. Currently it is uninterruptedly going on and number of devotees is also growing steadily. We publish a quarterly newsletter Sankirtana Samachara.

Besides Cuttack and Bhubaneswar the Sankirtana programme is going on other places like Khurda, Jatni, Berhampur, Nayagarh, Bhadrak, Kantilo, Puri, Balasore etc.

In every festive occasion devotees are giving seva for distribution of Prasada, Bhajana, Kirtana, cleaning and assisting in Pujari department, in sweet stall, in festival department, in food for life and in distribution of Prabhupada’s books as per direction of temple authorities.

They are also giving donations in festive occasions and collecting donation for temple projects. Some devotees are attending spiritual programme daily i.e. Mangala Arati, Bhagavatam Class and some devotees are giving Bhagavata Gita, Bhagavatam and Chaitanya Charitamrita classes. Some devotees are mahasevakas who contribute sumptuously during festivals. Devotees are conducting house programmes and preaching and giving classes in other centers of Odisha like centers in Bahanaga, Burla, Berhampur, Gadeigiri and senior devotees have been contributing in management of temple affairs.

As a result by the grace of Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga more and more people are becoming Krishna Conscious.

We all are doing our best to fulfill the mission of Mahaprabhu. Following in the footsteps of our previous spiritual preceptors, like Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva we look forward to improve in future.
